Renu launches single for World Trauma Day
There are moments when language cannot carry the whole truth of an experience, and music can sometimes go where ordinary speech cannot.
‘Liferaft into Tomorrow’ is one of the pieces from the concept album for The Burgundy Book - the work Renu began creating in response to the accident and near-death experience that changed her life in 2017, and which is now also in development as a digitally immersive musical for the stage - and it holds a small but vital moment within that much larger story: the possibility that, even inside profound trauma, something can reach towards tomorrow.
Renu released the single to mark World Trauma Day because trauma is so often described only through damage, and while that damage is real, so too are the losses, the changes to the body and the long, uneven work of learning how to live in a life that no longer resembles the one you knew - none of which she would ever want to make neat or sentimental.
But trauma can also contain contradictions: terror and beauty can exist impossibly close together, grief can live beside love, and a person can be suffering and still glimpse something luminous. That paradox is central to The Burgundy Book, and it is part of what Liferaft into Tomorrow carries.
The single is not an instruction to “move on”, nor a promise that everything becomes easy, but an offering from inside the experience: a musical handhold, a breath, a small vessel capable of carrying us towards what has not yet been written.
Liferaft into Tomorrow is available on Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon Music.
